What is the definition of Magazine Depth? No, not the standard 80 feet length of an earth-covered magazine. The term has been coined with several meanings but is used depending on the domain. Here are just a few—
Definitions by Domain
Maritime. Magazine depth is how much volume of fire can be fielded on a single platform.
Air Defense. "magazine depth": munitions stockpiles sufficient to offensively overwhelm, defensively defeat, and strategically outlast the enemy.
Land. magazine depth – the number of munitions stored in peacetime.
Large-scale Combat Operations
Field Manual 3-0, Operations discusses munitions expenditure related to Large-scale combat operations, that it—
·        can consume corps and division ammunition stocks in 72 to 96 hours, and
·        requires large reserves of both precision and unguided munitions and the sustainment capacity to move them to forward locations.
Definition
The two definitions separately are: 1) A magazine is a structure built to store ammunition and explosives. 2) Depth is the extension of operations in time, space, or purpose to achieve definitive results. Which can provide a more definitive definition—
Magazine Depth. Stored munitions that provide for extending operations in time, space, or purpose to achieve military outcomes.
Storage of munitions can include down to the platform and up to the national level. The key is understanding that magazine depth includes schedule, echelon, and objective throughout the operational environment.
Conclusion
Using military terms without clear definitions can hinder effective communication among partners. Defining terms whenever possible is crucial to avoid this, especially for joint and multinational operations. Tailoring terminology to a specific audience helps communicate ideas, but not when trying to meet a unified objective.
